Old Food Revival – Turn Left Overs Into A New Dish

Maybe you’ve heard enough about recycling. You hear this word almost everywhere and you can read many articles and stories about this topic because many are now getting involved in “reduce, reuse and recycle” advocacies. Campaigns about this are getting widespread through articles, blogs, information dissemination and social media posts. This is a good indicator that many people’s eyes are now being opened to this subject. I’m in to this for long time now and I’ve actually had few posts about this topic. I’ve also featured some of my crafts from recycled materials. But this time, I would like to talk about recycling applied on the dining table a.k.a. old food revival ; turn left-overs into a new dish. We can also apply recycling principle in food. Instead of wasting left over and throwing them away we can create a “brand new” dish from them. Did you know that about ninety percent of us throw away food too soon and twenty percent of food we purchase never gets eaten while there are people in some part of the world dying in hunger and starvation. What an irony!   Maybe that’s why Mother Theresa once said this; “I only feel angry when I see waste. When I see people throwing away things we could use.”  She is right, yes all “waste” which include left over food, can only be called “waste”, if we throw them away because we literally wasted them by doing so. We throw food which are so precious to the hungry ones, if we think about them, we can not waste left overs. Let’s think of some ways how we can save food from being wasted and at the same time enjoy its brand new taste.

I was looking for something to eat yesterday and I found a half package of bread pan which was already two days on my kitchen shelf. I also found 1/4 small pumpkin (squash) which was inside my refrigerator for more than a week so instead of throwing them, I mashed the bread with a half cup of fresh milk. I grated the squash. I mixed the mashed bread pan and grated squash together. I put two eggs, beaten thoroughly, one medium size chopped onion, one clove garlic chopped finely, black pepper, salt to taste. You can add any seasoning of your preference but for me I’d prefer it without additional seasoning. I mixed all these ingredients well then on the pre-heated frying pan with cooking oil, I fried it. Lo! The old bread and a piece of old pumpkin turned out to be a delicious meal or snack. I used calamansi (lime) with soy sauce for dipping. You may use vinegar with salt, pepper, minced garlic and hot chili, or catsup or fish sauce depending on your taste. You may also read https://creatifyinfo.com/a-taste-of-health-wise-simplicity/

In life’s application, we are like old foods that are to be thrown away because of our sins but because God is merciful, He is giving us a second chance to change our direction and He leads us to the right path for the better. Though sometimes we make mistake in life and we feel so final, and may think it’s all over for us but no! Life’s journey isn’t like a marathon in which we only have one chance to win before it’s over. God will give us a second chance. God is giving you another chance to turn from your old ways and turn to Him. And because God has given you a free will, you have it within your power to deny His grace. You can tell Him “no” again. And who knows, maybe you will have another chance to choose Him. But what if you don’t get another chance?  And when God has given us a new life, we should respond by giving Him the rest of our lives. He deserves it, doesn’t He? My goal in life is to live every day knowing that I served God to the fullest. Will I fail? Yes, unfortunately I will. But it’s not going to stop me from trying.  Like the old foods that can be turned into a new dish, like the foods having “revival”, having a changed life is possible because there is new life in Christ Jesus. He alone can wipe away the old and bring in the new. His power to change us is like the hands of the cook making a dish out of the old food, making a “food revival”, He alone can give us a new start in life. He alone can give anyone a second chance, if you believe and surrender your life to Him.
