“When you are a mother, you are never really alone in your thoughts. A mother always has to think twice, once for herself and once for her child.” —Sophia Loren
Motherhood is a calling that makes a woman complete. A good example of being a responsible mother is a legacy to be remembered even when we are gone. As I was writing this, I was lying on a sick bed and the recent deaths of two family members once again reminded me of our short, temporal stay on earth. As I was contemplating on this truth, I thought of my three daughters. As if it was only yesterday when they were still little kids. Now, they are mothers too. And I know that there will come a time that I would not be around for them anymore. As a mother, my heart’s desire is for them to remember the good life’s lessons I taught them and leave behind all their failures but learn from them. Below is my open message for them;
To my three daughters,
I was once just like you – a young mother waiting for her children to grow;
dreaming of their good futures;
trying to lead them to the path of success.
I was a young mother like you,
who rejoice when her kids rejoice;
who trembled when her kids were in pain.
Her children’s tears break her heart;
Yes, their cry brings her despair…
Their failure is her failure and their victory is her victory…
This is how to be a mother…there are pains, there are tears but being one made her a complete woman…
Time runs so fast, and now I’m old and getting closer to the conclusion of my life’s story. Now, you are grown ups and all of you are mothers too,
Maybe somehow you understand now how it was for me when you’re small…
How it hurt me when you chose your own ways that led to your broken hearts and dreams…
Now you know how it is to love the flesh of your flesh, the blood of your blood…
And till I breathe my last, the love that I have for you will never subside;
Till I stand face to face with my Creator, my prayer for all of you will I bring to His throne…
Till then maybe you will remember that once upon a time, you had a mother who truly love and cares, though sometimes unrecognized. But I understand, just fly high and reach for your dreams but never forget you are mothers. Your children’s future will be formed by your guiding hands and their destiny by your tender love. Fulfill your calling.
Happy Mother’s Day, my daughters. I love you all so much.

“The natural state of motherhood is unselfishness. When you become a mother, you are no longer the center of your own universe. You relinquish that position to your children.” —Jessica Lange
